“This . . . this is ridiculous,” protested Sabik. “How is it you three have had access to these facilities? This wasn’t listed in the curriculum guide!”

Beezle and Knot had been hesitant to let Sabik into their circle but were curious to hear how the pair had escaped certain death. Elara expected more pushback, but everyone was overworked, and a distraction was welcome.

“It’s a special projects lab for . . . for special students,” Elara said. “You have to be invited.”

“Well, I wasn’t invited! I’m special!”

“To clarify,” Beezle interjected, “the designation ‘special’ in this instance refers to careless students considered at high risk for blowing things up.”

“Oh,” Sabik responded, mollified. “Okay, that’s fair. That sounds a lot like Elara.”

“Yes.” Beezle nodded with an innocent smile. “She has blown up many things these last few weeks! She has proven quite talented at destruction!”

“Not helping, Beezle,” Elara responded.

Knot sat down heavily on a chair. “Why is he here again?”

“The headmistress has some thoughts on what we should be studying.” And with that, Elara pulled out the folder with the Impossible Equation and explained exactly what was expected of them all.

“I changed my mind,” Sabik muttered after a long silence. “I don’t want to be invited.”

“Where would we even start?” Knot asked. “I mean, the Impossible Equation isn’t possible. That’s the whole point. Rapid terraforming is a disaster! So . . .”

Elara sighed. “That’s what I told the headmistress. But she wants us to try.”

Beezle picked up the folder of papers and stared at it intently. After a moment, she gasped and held her hand to her mouth in an expression of surprise. Everyone practically jumped out of their chairs.

“What?” Elara asked hurriedly. “What is it? Did you figure something out?”

Beezle shook her head with a sad smile. “No. I wondered if I might trick myself into suddenly realizing the answer, as if it had been obvious the entire time. Much like conclusions are often drawn during dramatic points in holo-fictions.”

Sabik glared heavily. “Well, this isn’t a holo-fiction. It’s a very insane piece of homework. And we have to try something!”

Elara took the folder from Beezle and started handing documents out to her friends. “Let’s just start with the math. We’ll work out where to go once we’ve all gotten a good look at it and—” Elara stopped and held up a hand. “Wait . . . ,” she said. “Do you hear that?”

Everyone did. It was two adults, yelling at each other.

Elara quickly pushed her friends behind a nearby bookcase.

“Why are we hiding?” Sabik hissed quietly.

“I just don’t want to deal with any more angry teachers today. Unless you want more homework?” Elara answered.

“Quiet!” growled Knot, pushing herself between the two of them.

Peering between books, Elara could see Professor Sunderson. He was agitated and arguing with another figure. But who he was arguing with was just out of sight, and their voices barely carried.

“. . . quantum energy!” said the unseen person.

“. . . explain . . . stunt?” Sunderson fired back. “You know .
